The Metropolitan Water Board was responsible for construction, maintenance, and operation of a system of water works for the Metropolitan Water District, consisting of Boston and surrounding communities. The Distribution Department's duties included maintainence of the pumping stations, reservoirs, and pipelines. Weekly reports of the Distribution Department were submitted to the engineer of the department by the assistant superintendent.

The Metropolitan Water Board was established by St 1895, c 488 to construct, maintain, and operate a system of metropolitan water works for the Metropolitan Water District, consisting of Boston and surrounding communities.
